While onboard an expedition ship in 2019, the Captain navigated us inside the caldera of Deception Island which is an active volcano. A caldera is caused by the high section of a volcano caving in and filling with water. The island was once home to a number of whaling stations, although now home only to a few small scientific structures and a weather monitoring station. The image was captured by launching a drone from a rigid inflatable and still to this day, Deception is one of the most incredible locations I’ve been allowed to fly a drone.
